Our Story

OURstory Foundation was founded by Michelle Faye and Dorian Carey after years of planning, preparation, advocacy work, and conversations around the urgent need for stronger prevention-focused responses to domestic violence in Australia.

The foundation was created from a shared vision: to build an organisation that combines lived experience, professional knowledge, education, and community leadership to create real and lasting impact.

At the heart of OURstory is the belief that people with lived experience bring valuable insight, understanding, and leadership to this space. We believe stories have power. They create connection, challenge stigma, inspire action, and help communities better understand the realities of domestic violence and trauma.

Our founders recognised a significant gap in prevention-focused education and community engagement. Too often, conversations around domestic violence begin only after harm has already occurred. OurStory was created to help change that by focusing on education, awareness, early intervention, and cultural change.

Our team consists of professionals, educators, advocates, community leaders, and lived experience voices who are passionate about creating safer futures. We take a trauma-informed, practical, and human-centred approach to everything we do.

We understand that domestic violence is complex. It can include emotional abuse, coercive control, financial abuse, social isolation, psychological abuse, technological abuse, and physical violence. We also understand the lasting impacts violence can have on individuals, children, families, and communities.

That is why our work extends beyond awareness alone. We aim to create conversations that lead to action, education that creates behavioural change, and programs that empower people with practical tools and understanding.
